This blog post is in collaboration with Evolis Professional, however, opinions are my own.
Shock. That’s what I felt the day I got out of the shower and dried my hair the way I always did and looked in the mirror. I part my hair down the middle, so it should be even or close to being even on both sides – except it’s not. I couldn’t help but feel the stress and anxiety overcome me when I realized that half the hair on my head was scraggly and about 4 or 5 inches shorter than the opposite side. No, I didn’t get a butchered hair cut – my hair was breaking off.
I never thought that it would happen to me. I always use conditioner, I use oil in my hair before I dry it, I took vitamins daily and I thought that severe hair breakage like this was a myth. It felt awful, knowing that something I had tried to maintain was just falling apart and there was nothing I could do about it.
My hair was naturally long, like the photo above. I had gotten some highlights, but nothing too drastic. This is when I was serious about my vitamins – not just because I wanted long, healthy hair, but because I wanted an overall balanced health. In May 2016, I decided to go lighter. Which, I thought wasn’t going to be a big deal because I was getting my hair done by two celebrity hairstylists. Except, I wasn’t prepped on how to take care of my newly bleached mane, which could be the first and real underlying issue.
The second thing I did wrong was the way I was getting ready every morning for my new job. When I had first gotten lighter hair I was working as a sales lead in a retail store, which had great flexibility with hours. I was able to get ready for work at my own pace and I didn’t have to worry about traffic going into work in the afternoon and leaving work at 10:00 pm. Although that was great, it wasn’t my ideal job. Later, I landed a full-time graphic design position in a corporate office – I had to wake up at 5:00 am to be able to get ready and be at work by 8 am just like everyone else. Needless to say, I wasn’t used to waking up so early and having to rush to get ready in the morning. I took super hot showers, washed my hair in a rush and dried my hair in a rush. Within three months my hair was beginning to look scraggly and shorter than it used to. I didn’t seem to have the time nor the energy to pay attention to what was happening to my once lustrous hair. I was literally frying it.
Frying my hair combined with stress from a new job and probably also sleeping on a cotton pillowcase really caused severe damage to my hair. I had to dye my hair darker so that once my roots started growing out I wouldn’t have to dye it again for several months. I also had to cut my hair so that it would be even on both sides and not severely lopsided. I cried.
The distress lasted for months. I tried everything. Taking my daily vitamins, eating right, carefully brushing my hair and using hair oil to combat dryness. Everything seemed hopeless. It wasn’t until using Evolis Professional that I finally began to notice a difference in my hair. Within the first couple of weeks, I could literally feel a difference in the thickness of my hair. Although the length didn’t seem like it was there, I could finally begin to feel a difference. 3 months later, after using Evolis as instructed on the package did I finally see a difference in length. It grew! A lot!
